Department Overview
The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures offers an education in the languages, cultures, and literatures of Asia. Students will acquire linguistic and transcultural competence in one or more regions of Asia and learn to better appreciate Asia as a dynamic site of international cultural relations.
ALC currently offers students the opportunity to study the cultures and literatures of:

- Drama and Performance
- Film
- Literature
- Popular Culture
- Sexuality and Gender Studies
Students majoring in Asian Languages and Cultures will achieve high language proficiency while gaining in-depth knowledge of the rich cultural history of the region of their choice.
ALC emphasizes immersion in an Asian language, and the experiential development of cultural understanding. Study abroad is an important addition to the curriculum and is strongly encouraged for all department majors and minors.
Non-ALC majors/minors are also encouraged to study abroad. This invaluable experience allows students to integrate their linguistic and cultural knowledge into their professional and personal lives.
