Why ALC?

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures offers an education in the languages, cultures, and literatures of Asia.  Students will acquire linguistic and transcultural competence in one or more regions of Asia and learn to better appreciate Asia as a dynamic site of international cultural relations.  A few of our students share their reasons for studying Asian languages and cultures and what they gained from the experience.

A new book from Routledge (2022) features contributions from multiple ALC faculty

Daniel Majchrowicz writes on women’s travel writing in Urdu while David Boyk considers the Persianate genre of the tazkira, or biographical compendium, in early 20th century Patna. Laura Brueck, also a co-editor of the book, considers the disruptive possibilities of the vernacular in contemporary feminist writing.

The trials of teaching a ‘new’ script in a virtual world

The Times Higher Education published a short article co-written by Assistant Professor of Instruction Jingjing Ji, and lecturers Rana Raddawi and Ronit Alexander about teaching non-Roman scripts online.
