As we start this Spring quarter, we are at once encouraged by the increasing availability of COVID-19 vaccinations and the promise that we will be able to gather together again in person in the months ahead, and also deeply saddened by the recent rise of violence aimed at Asians, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders in our communities. We stand in solidarity with the families and communities of the victims of the massacre in Atlanta, Georgia on March 17, 2021, and confirm our commitment as scholars and students of the languages and cultures of Asia to dedicate our research, teaching, and lifelong learning to the goal of dismantling racist and misogynist structures that enable such acts of hate. We resolve to use the opportunities we have as students and professors of Asian Languages and Cultures to speak out against rhetoric that marginalizes, stereotypes, or threatens Asians and Asian Americans, and to redouble our efforts to cultivate equity in our spaces of learning and our broader communities.
