Ubakum Mere

Class of 2023

What inspired you to pursue a major or minor in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC)?
I was inspired to start learning Japanese specifically by my high school friend who came to Houston from Tokyo during my junior year. She told me so much about her life in Japan and I wanted to learn the language and more about the culture, so I took the chance through the ALC department.

How did your studies in the ALC department impact you personally or professionally?
As I am now teaching English in Japan, I have to interact with my coworkers, explain activities and teach classes, and navigate daily life mainly in Japanese. Without the amazing professors in the Japanese program specifically, I wouldn't have been able to transition into life here as smoothly. I truly use almost everything I was taught in class, and have been instilled with the tools to pick up more colloquial Japanese because of it.

Is there a specific course, event, or memory associated with the ALC department that sticks out to you from your time at Northwestern?
What I remember most about my time in the ALC department were the language tables. It was something I looked forward to on a weekly basis, and became a kind of third space for me throughout the very busy quarters.

What are you working on right now that excites you the most OR are there any accomplishments you would like to share?
It might not be particularly exciting, but I am currently re-entering a test taking phase. I would like to do translation work and need a Japanese language certificate to do so, so I am currently studying to obtain it. Additionally, I am readying myself to re-enter school so I am also studying for the GRE as well. I am very excited about my future and I am just doing what I can to make sure I am ready for it.

What’s a fun fact that you want to share with the Northwestern community?
The Tsugaru region of Aomori, where I currently reside, is home to one of the most unique and difficult dialects of Japanese to understand even for other native speakers of standard Japanese.

How do you enjoy spending your free time?
Lately, I have started making short videos for my family and friends, so they can see and experience my life in Japan vicariously through these little vlogs. When I have time, I am editing and planning for my next videos.
