The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures offers an education in the languages, cultures, and literatures of Asia.  Students will acquire linguistic and transcultural competence in one or more regions of Asia as a dynamic site of international cultural relations.

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures offers an education in the languages, cultures, and literatures of Asia.  Students will acquire linguistic and transcultural competence in one or more regions of Asia and learn to better appreciate Asia as a dynamic site of international cultural relations.  A few of our students share their reasons for studying Asian languages and cultures and what they gained from the experience.

Dahye Kim wins the Journal of Korean Studies' Outstanding Article Award for 2022

In her article, Kim examines the emergence of Korean online science fiction against the backdrop of the process of informatization, the global circulation of postmodern discourse, and the blurring boundary between the cultural and technological realms in 1980s and 1990s South Korea.

Stories about Us

Jingjing Ji, Yan Liu, Grace Wu, and Min-Min Liang have been working on Modern Chinese for Heritage Beginners.  The books aims to serve as a stepping-stone for Chinese heritage language learners’ future Chinese learning, inspiring them to reflect on their identities, learn Chinese American history, and embrace their cultural heritage.

Starlight

Presented by Aao Mil Baithen in partnership with the Race, Caste, and Colorism project and supported by Northwestern University’s Buffett Institute for Global Affairs.  The community enjoyed six weeks of art-making, creative workshops, film screenings, performances, music + a reading nook and listening stations.  It was a huge success!
