The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures offers an education in the languages, cultures, and literatures of Asia.  Students will acquire linguistic and transcultural competence in one or more regions of Asia and learn to better appreciate Asia as a dynamic site of international cultural relations.  A few of our students share their reasons for studying Asian languages and cultures and what they gained from the experience.

The World in Words: Travel Writing and the Global Imagination in Muslim South Asia

Daniel Majchrowicz's new book shows how Urdu travel writing gave voice to a global imagination that reflected the ambition and aspiration of Indians and Pakistanis as they negotiated their place in the changing world of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Stories about Us

Jingjing Ji, Yan Liu, Grace Wu, and Min-Min Liang have been working on Modern Chinese for Heritage Beginners.  The books aims to serve as a stepping-stone for Chinese heritage language learners’ future Chinese learning, inspiring them to reflect on their identities, learn Chinese American history, and embrace their cultural heritage.

The essays written by students in this bilingual anthology, edited by Licheng Gu, are suitable for middle school students, college students, and adults learning Chinese as well as for Chinese students learning English.

Presented by Aao Mil Baithen in partnership with the Race, Caste, and Colorism project and supported by Northwestern University’s Buffett Institute for Global Affairs.  The community enjoyed six weeks of art-making, creative workshops, film screenings, performances, music + a reading nook and listening stations.  It was a huge success!
